Interproximal plaque index in patients with type 2 diabetes before and after an educational intervention

Introduction: Patients with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) are at greater risk of developing oral diseases and their complications. Strategies such as measuring the interproximal dent plaque index, using a disclosing tablet, can identify the oral hygiene in a patient and can be used as a preventive strategy for T2D patients.
Objective: Identify the interproximal dent plaque index in T2D patients, before and after an educational intervention.
Methods: Quasi-experimental, longitudinal, prospective and unicentric study. Non probabilistic sample size of 346 patients ages older than 18 with T2D diagnoses who attended CADIMSS and odontology services at Familiar Medicine Unit 57 in Puebla. The interproximal plaque index was assessed before and after a series of educational interventions over 4 months. The Friedman test was used to identify differences in the interproximal dental plaque index in the group.
Results: The majority were women (61.6%), completed primary school (34.7%), married (66.8%), and housewives (69.9%). 2.9% of the participants received oral monotherapy, 50.9% insulin and 46.2% dual therapy. After applying the Friedman test, a difference was observed between the interproximal dental plaque index after the second month after the educational intervention (p <0.001).
Conclusion: A decrease in plaque formation was observed after the educational interventions, which suggests an improvement in oral hygiene.
