Abstract

Introduction: Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (POMS) is one of the most frequent endocrinopathies and the leading cause of infertility due to anovulation. However, to date, no studies have shown the endocrinological effect of POMS on apoptotic markers in the ovary.
Objective: To analyze the expression of caspase-3 in the ovary of a preclinical model of POMS and how it can be modulated by the intake of different concentrations of Bauhinia sp. extract.
Material and methods: In prepubertal female mice, POMS was induced by the administration of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), followed by the oral administration of Bauhinia sp. extract. At the end of the treatment, the mice were euthanized, and caspase-3 (Cas3) expression in the ovaries was analyzed by immunofluorescence.
Results: It was observed that there is an elevated expression of Cas3 in the ovarian tissue of mice with POMS; however, the intake of Bauhinia sp. extract can reduce its expression. This demonstrates for the first time that one of the effects of POMS is apoptosis in ovarian cells through the in situ expression of Cas3.
Conclusions: POMS induces apoptosis in the ovary, and the intake of Bauhinia sp. has a modulating effect on Cas3 expression.
