Abstract

A disease or microorganism is classified as emerging when the causative agent or the disease it causes has appeared for the first time within a population. Re-emerging diseases, on the other hand, are caused by variants of known infectious agents, when their incidence, virulence, or geographic reach has increased dramatically.
