Abstract

Helicobacter pylori is a globally prevalent bacterium associated with a wide range of gastrointestinal diseases. The aim of this study was to detect H. pylori infection and to explore its relationship with food hygiene habits among university students from the Centro Universitario de la Salud of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (CUS-BUAP), Teziutlán campus. A cross-sectional, descriptive, and exploratory study was conducted in 100 students of both sexes, aged 18 to 23 years, recruited through convenience sampling. H. pylori infection was assessed using rapid immunochromatographic stool antigen tests, and a self-administered questionnaire was applied to evaluate food hygiene habits and gastrointestinal symptoms. The prevalence of H. pylori infection was 28%. No statistically significant associations were found between H. pylori positivity and the epidemiological categories analyzed, including direct transmission risk factors, personal and food hygiene habits, food exposure, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Although some practices showed odds ratios greater than one, wide confidence intervals and lack of statistical significance limit causal interpretation. In conclusion, H. pylori infection remains present in university populations, highlighting the need to strengthen prevention strategies, health education, and epidemiological surveillance in young adults.
