Author Guidelines

Revista Mexicana de Investigación Médica is the official dissemination organ of the Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP). It is an open-access journal (free for both authors and readers) aimed at health professionals, seeking to foster the generation and dissemination of knowledge based on original works from the broad field of Medicine, as well as providing updated and relevant information for health.

The journal accepts original articles in Spanish and English.

Peer Review Process

All manuscripts received undergo a double-blind peer review process, in which both authors and reviewers remain anonymous throughout the evaluation. This procedure ensures impartiality, objectivity, and scientific rigor in editorial decisions. Each article is evaluated by at least two specialists external to the editorial committee, who assess originality, relevance, methodological validity, and contribution to scientific knowledge in the corresponding field.

The Revista Mexicana de Investigación Médica is published semiannually (two issues per year) in both electronic and print formats. All articles undergo double-blind peer review. For this purpose, the journal will consider contributions in the following sections:

  • Original Article

  • Review Article

  • Case Report

  • Consensus Document

  • Expert Opinions

TYPES OF ARTICLES

ORIGINAL ARTICLE

Its content presents the results of original clinical or basic research. In original articles, the body of the manuscript must be structured into: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, and References. Maximum length: 10 to 16 pages, 4 figures, tables, and 45 references.

REVIEW ARTICLE

Must be on a current topic of medical relevance. The primary or corresponding author must be an authority in the field or topic being reviewed and must attach a bibliographic list of their contributions that supports their expertise in the subject. Minimum of 50 references. http://www.prisma-statement.org/PRISMAStatement

CASE REPORT

Case reports must correspond to interesting and well-documented presentations, written with the clarity and detail expected in daily clinical practice. It is essential to include an abstract in both Spanish and English (maximum 100 words), followed by an introduction, case presentation, discussion, illustrations, and bibliography. The maximum length is 10 pages, with a limit of 6 figures, tables, and/or graphs, and a maximum of 30 references. The narrative should focus on the most relevant aspects of the clinical history and the diagnostic-therapeutic approach, highlighting its academic and clinical contribution. Furthermore, the manuscript must appropriately follow international guidelines for case reports, such as the CARE guidelines.

CONSENSUS DOCUMENTS

These types of manuscripts will be accepted according to editorial criteria; the journal reserves the right to publish consensus documents deemed relevant to readers and aligned with the journal's vision and objectives. Suggested length is 35 to 45 pages, including bibliography, 6 figures, and 6 tables.

EXPERT OPINIONS

These are comments on recent advances in Internal Medicine and how these may affect the medical vision for future applications in diagnosis and/or therapy. Suggested length is up to 1,200 words plus one small table or figure and no more than 7 references.

ARTICLE STRUCTURE

ABSTRACT

To be presented in both English and Spanish; the abstract must be structured: introduction, objectives, materials and methods, results, and conclusion (without subheadings), with a length of 200 to 250 words. At the end, 3 to 6 keywords should be listed to facilitate inclusion in international indexes. It is recommended to use terms from the most recent Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) of the Index Medicus.

INTRODUCTION

Should include the background, problem statement, and study objective in a free and continuous narrative duly supported by literature, avoiding a detailed bibliographic review or a summary of results (maximum 800 words, 1.5 line spacing, Times New Roman 12 pt).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The characteristics of the sample and the methods used must be clearly indicated with pertinent references, such that the reading of this section allows other researchers to conduct similar studies. Statistical methods used must be clearly stated with the corresponding reference. Authors must detail in this section the ethical procedures followed (necessary for experiments involving animals, patients, confidential data management, informed consent, etc.) and that they have authorization from their institution's ethics committee. Never use patients' names, initials, or hospital numbers, especially in illustrative material.

RESULTS

Should include the important findings of the study, comparing them with strictly necessary figures or graphs that expand upon the information provided in the text. Figures and tables must be sent in the original document in which they were designed and in independent files. Do not duplicate information in the text and tables/figures; emphasize or summarize only the important findings. Figures must be numbered with Arabic numerals and tables with Roman numerals. Write the figure or table number in parentheses (e.g., Fig. 1; Table I).

DISCUSSION

Results must be contrasted with what is reported in the literature and with the objectives and hypotheses proposed in the work. In this section, do not repeat information from the Introduction or Results. Implications and limitations of the findings must be highlighted, including suggestions for future research, without issuing conclusions that are not fully supported by the data.

CONCLUSIONS

Conclusions must synthesize the most relevant findings of the study. If results are preliminary, future research should be proposed. It is fundamental that conclusions maintain coherence with the stated objectives and are directly based on the research process developed.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

In this section, acknowledgments to individuals and institutions, as well as funding, will be described. This section should be placed on the title page so that the main manuscript document remains anonymous.

ETHICAL DECLARATIONS / ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
