Research for what purpose?

Why conduct research? This is not a question that is often asked, perhaps because the answer seems obvious, or because consequentialist thinking is considered invalid. The research process is usually more important than its consequences. Research must be done, and done well. Whether or not the results are valuable and useful seems secondary; after all, there is no such thing as useless knowledge, and sooner or later it will find an application. The purpose of this paper is to focus on scientific research from a teleological perspective, that is, from the perspective of its results, consequences, outcomes, by-products, and applications, and in passing to explore some of the motivations that encourage dedication to research. Three aspects of the “why” of scientific research in medicine can be identified:
1. To generate knowledge.
2. As an educational strategy.
3. To take advantage of the incentives that promote it.
